Independent Living – Suomi Eesti Maja (SEM)
Suomi Esti Maja provides a warm atmosphere and clean surroundings to help each resident to feel comfortable and safe in their surroundings. Many activities are planned and residents can be as busy and involved as they desire or, they can just enjoy the company of others.
There are 134 apartments available for seniors 60 and over who can live independently. 75 of these apartments are subsidized through Sault Ste. Marie’s Social Housing Application Centre. Applications for these geared-to-income units are processed by Sault Ste. Marie Housing Programs.

Founded in 1976, Suomi Eesti Maja (Phase 1) is an independent senior citizen facility. It strives to ensure the privacy, security and maintenance of a safe and clean environment that provides a pleasant atmosphere where residents can live independently. Community service agencies may provide home and nursing care. Suomi Eesti Maja is a four storey building with 2 elevators consisting of 134 apartments. It has a dining room/recreation hall for social events and functions.
There is a Finnish/English library, a craft room, a laundry area and a sauna. Parking spots are provided for tenants and a parking area is provided for their visitors. Small garden plots are also available for those interested in maintaining a garden or flowerbed.
The minimum age limit is 60 years of age. Some apartments are geared to income as designated by the Sault Ste. Marie & District Social Administration Board.
