Frequently Asked Questions

We're here to help make your move to independent or assisted living an easier transition. 


Here are some frequently asked questions for residents, staff and volunteers. Please feel free to contact us for any questions or concerns you may have.

General

  • Can you smoke on the property?

    No,  we are a completely smoke free facility. There is no smoking in the buildings, apartments or property.


  • Do you have to be Finnish to live there?

    No. Part of our mission statement states “To provide accommodation, care and other supportive services for the health and welfare of aged persons in keeping with their special needs and wishes, without regard to race, colour, creed, nationality or place of origin in an atmosphere conducive to the social and individual dignity and well-being of the aged.”

  • Is there an age restriction to any of the buildings?

    Kotitalo Supportive Housing:

    • Disabled adult (55 years of age or older)
    • Adult (65 years of age or older)

    Uusi Koti:

    • 55 years 

    Suomi Eesti Maja:

    • 60 years
  • If I move into Supportive Housing, can I keep my car?

    Yes, there is parking available.

  • Do you allow pets?

    For Uusi Koti and Suomi Eesti Maja - Yes, one small dog or cat allowed. 


    However, if moving into Kotitalo Supportive Housing, the manager will assess if resident safety at risk.

  • Is there a guest room in the event I have out-of-town company?

    We have two fully furnished daily guest suite rentals at Uusi Koti that is like a ‘home away from home'.

  • Do you allow scooters or electric wheel chairs?

    No scooters or electric wheel chairs allowed in Kotitalo Supportive Housing.


    No scooters are allowed in Mauno Kaihla Koti Nursing Home due to lack of space.


    Suomi Eesti Maja and Uusi Koti Independent Living Apartments allow both.

  • Do you have extra storage space available?

    No.

  • If residing in supportive housing or nursing home, can you have a guest join you for a meal?

    Yes, meal tickets are to be purchased in advance from the Kotitalo unit clerk.



  • Is there any government funding for assisted living or nursing home?

    Assisted Living- No


    Nursing home - depending on your previous year tax return income, there may be assistance available.


    Uusi Koti has no geared to income.


    Suomi Eesti Maja has 75 apartments that are geared to income and you must apply via Social Housing on Brock St.


Careers / Volunteering

  • Do you have to know the Finnish language to work there?

    While its not a requirement for employment with the OFRA, it is a valuable asset as it helps in keeping the Finnish culture and traditions alive in our daily engagement with our Finnish speaking residents.
